Expect the unexpected when you're sightseeing in Bermuda.
By Claire Smith
Adventurous divers will tell you, encountering the centuries-old wreck of a sunken ship is like discovering a new world. With more than 250 ships scuttled among its vibrant coral reefs, a marvellous surprise may await you where you least expect to find it. For example, who would expect to discover an underwater wonderland complete with colorful reef fish and other exotic sea life at a shopping and restaurant complex?
Snorkel Park, one of the hottest attractions at the Royal Naval Dockyard, is just such a place —- but you'd never suspect that a tropical oasis was tucked beyond its gates in Dockyard's northeast corner. In fact, it's just minutes from the bus and ferry stops.
Without a doubt, Snorkel Park offers some of the best snorkelling to be had in Bermuda. To reach it you make your way through a limestone tunnel. Don't be surprised to hear your fellow tourists gasp when you reach the end and find swaying palm trees, a sparkling white-sand beach and stunning ocean views.
If you've ever enjoyed snorkelling you probably had to take a boat to deeper waters. That's why many water-sports enthusiasts are surprised to find a first-rate underwater adventure right off the beach, in fairly shallow water at Snorkel Park. So you can rent some gear at the beach hut and dive right in!
Beneath the waves, you can explore the wonders of a natural coral reef, including beautiful tropical fish and a sunken sloop, appropriately named Seahorse. You'll float above feeding parrotfish, glide alongside angelfish and doctor fish, and hang out with blue tang, grey snappers and myriad wrasse fish. Even more spectacular are close encounters with octopi, squid, pompanos, mackerels and bonefish, which aren't usually seen in waters such as these. Snorkelling at the park is great for first-timers and novices alike.
Whether you're looking to just kick back and relax or have some fun, Snorkel Park is the place you cannot miss. From snorkel gear, paddleboats and kayaks to inflatable toys and waterslides, there is something for everyone. More adventurous visitors can try the fun new underwater scooters, take a Snuba tour or hop aboard a banana boat for a wet and wild ride.
Don't feel like getting wet? You can still enjoy the sun and sand. Get going with a game of volleyball, kick back in a lounge chair or enjoy the ambiance at Hammerheads Bar & Grill. Sample the local rum potions as you gaze over the turquoise sea. Feeling hungry? Just pop on downstairs to the grill for a variety of tasty dishes and snacks.
Snorkel Park is open daily from 9 a.m. Admission is free and the park's friendly staff members will do their best to make your visit a memorable one.
